XDF guide

Why unlock an XDF file

An XDF edit password can be lost. An encrypted XDF can also prevent import into WinOLS. XDF Utils helps with both tasks. It can recover an edit protection password and create an unlocked XDF copy.

An XDF is a definition file for TunerPro. It tells the software where to find tables and other values in a matching BIN file. It also defines how to show those values, including their axes, units, and equations.

Recover a lost edit password

You may have made an XDF, set an edit password, and lost that password over time. The protection can stop you from changing the definitions, even when you can use them in TunerPro.

XDF Utils can show the edit protection password from a supported file after it opens the XDF. You can use that password in TunerPro or download an unlocked copy to edit the definitions.

Two passwords have different uses:

  • An edit password limits changes to the XDF definitions.
  • An open password is needed to open and decrypt some protected XDF files.

XDF Utils can open files that use TunerPro's default protection. If the XDF requires an open password, you must supply the correct password first. XDF Utils cannot recover an unknown open password.

Prepare an XDF for import into WinOLS

WinOLS can import TunerPro XDF maps with EVC's OLS526 TunerPro XDF Importer plugin. EVC states that the plugin accepts only unencrypted XDF files. Read EVC's XDF import requirements.

An XDF that opens in TunerPro can still be encrypted on disk. XDF Utils creates an unlocked copy with readable XML content. This removes the encryption barrier for the import.

To prepare the file and start the import:

  1. Confirm that the OLS526 plugin is installed in WinOLS.
  2. Open the matching BIN in a WinOLS project.
  3. Use XDF Utils to download an unlocked copy of your XDF.
  4. Drag the unlocked XDF into the WinOLS project to start the import.
  5. Check the imported addresses, axes, units, and values against the matching BIN.

EVC does not guarantee full XDF format support. Unlocking removes encryption, but import support still depends on the file and the plugin. See EVC's format limits.

Keep your original file

XDF Utils creates a separate unlocked download. Your original XDF stays unchanged. Unlocking the XDF does not change the BIN file.

Use the tool only with an XDF that you own or have permission to unlock.
